PART SIX TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION
THEIR HISTORY AND FOUNDER
In order to understand the Transcendental Mediation movement, it is best that we first look at its history and founder. The Transcendental Meditation movement, also known as "TM" was popularized within the Western world by Mahesh Brasad Warma, better known as the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who was born in 1911 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The name "Maharishi" means "great sage" or "teacher;" Mahesh is his family name; and Yogi refers to him as "a practitioner of yoga." Yoga is one of the six schools of East Indian philosophy. At the age of 31, Maharishi graduated from the Allahabad University with a degree in physics. Afterwards, he became a follower of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati; commonly referred to as, "Guru Dev." For a period of twelve years, Maharishi studied at Guru Dev's feet learning the technique of meditation, which today is referred to as TM.
