Part 11 WHO WILL YOU SERVE?

TEXT- JOSHUA 24:14-18

INTRODUCTION

Here in this passage we find Joshua had called the nation of Israel to Shechem.

This was located on the floor of a valley near Mount Gerizim and Ebal.  In fact, it was the geographical center of Canaan.

It was at this city that Abraham built the first altar to the Lord, and where God appeared to him.

Genesis 12:7  The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Jacob also purchased a field near this city and settled there for a time.

Genesis 33:18-20  After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent. 20There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.

In verses 14-21 in our text, some form of the word “serve” is used ten different times.

A woman walked up to the manager of a department store. "Are you hiring
any help?" she asked.

"No," he said. "We already have all the staff we need."

"Then would you mind getting someone to wait on me?" she asked.

Today we are going to look at verses 14-15 and concentrate on six different characteristics that are involved in serving God.

Joshua 24:14-15  "Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15"If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
