WHY YOU CAN BELIEVE THE BIBLE
Life From A-Z in the Word Part 18 of 22
Psalm 119:137-144
Tonight our text is found in Psalm 119:137-144 and the title of my message is, “Why I Can Believe The Bible.”
An old man who had never flown in a plane took his first airplane ride. His friends knew how apprehensive he was and were eager to hear how it went. At the first opportunity, they asked him if he enjoyed the flight. "Well," he commented, "it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. But I'll tell you this. I never did put all my weight down!"
That's how a lot of people think when it comes to the Bible. They don’t take God at His Word and never "put all their weight down." As a result they are plagued by doubts, fears, and uncertainties.
Here is what David shows us about God’s Word in our text tonight.
I can believe God’s Word because it is: RIGHTEOUS
In this eighteenth section David begins each verse with the eighteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet “tsadhe” which is also a symbol for, as well, as the first letter in the Hebrew word for “righteousness.” Righteousness is the theme throughout this section. It’s a word that is used 4 or five times in our text depending on what version of the Bible you’re using.
The topic of righteousness is a difficult concept to understand. If you would like to know more about this you need to read the Book of Romans which extensively covers this subject. In the first 8 chapters of Romans Paul speaks about the principles of God’s righteousness. One of these is God’s condemnation. He also speaks of God’s justification and His sanctification. Then in the last 8 chapters he speaks of how to apply God’s righteousness to our lives in a practical everyday way.
Here in our text David gives us three ways righteousness can be expressed through our lives.
