LOVING JESUS FIRST
TEXT- HEBREWS 2:1-4
Introduction
On the first Sunday of every month this year in 1989 we are looking at the Book of Hebrews and seeing what we can learn about putting Jesus first in our church as well as our Christian life.
Last month we looked at Hebrews chapter 1 and this month we are going to look at chapter 2.
Hebrews is a book that presents the preeminence of Jesus Christ.
The word preeminence means that Jesus is the greatest, the most superior, the very best person that has every existed.
He is to be number one because He is above all others.
The book of Hebrews shows us how Jesus is greater and better than anyone or anything else.
This month I’d like us to consider how to put Jesus first in our love.
How that we need to make Him our first love.
In February every year we celebrate a very special holiday called Valentine’s Day.
During this time of year many are thinking about the topic of love and how to best express it. So, today we’re emphasizing how to put Jesus first in our love.
A wife was married to a man she didn’t love. He made her get up early in the morning at five o’clock, cook his breakfast, and serve it at six o’clock sharp. He made her wait on him, and was exacting his demands on her time. He life was made miserable trying to satisfy the requests of her husband. Finally he died. After a few years she married again. This time she married a man whom she really loved. One day while clearing out some old papers, she came across the strict set of rules her former husband had written out for her to obey. Carefully she read them over. “Get up at five. Serve breakfast at six sharp.” On and on she read. Then she stopped and thought, and realized that she was still fulfilling every single one of these demands, but she had not realized it because this time she was doing it out of love.
So it is with our relationship with Jesus. Some people find it hard to obey Jesus, but when you truly love Him, his demands are not burdensome. Some people say it’s just too hard to serve Jesus, but when you love Jesus it’s not difficult to serve Him.
This morning I’d like us to look at three ways to keep your love for Jesus from becoming stale.
